A legend about the peonies details the story of an empress who was distressed during the winter because no flowers were blooming. She wrote a poem appealing for the flowers to bloom early and her wish was granted. All the flowers started to grow . . . except for the peonies. They did not want to come up when it was not their time. That story symbolizes that peonies do not like to bloom until their season!
