Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman'
Southern Gentleman Winterberry- A reliable male pollinator for female winterberries like ‘Winter Red’. Grows easily in average, acidic, medium to wet soils and tolerates both sun and part shade. Prefers moist, organic loam but adapts to both light and heavy soils—even wet, boggy, or swampy conditions typical of its native Eastern North American habitat.
As a male variety, Southern Gentleman won’t produce berries, but it’s essential for pollinating nearby female winterberries (one male can support 6–10 females). Blooms on new growth—prune in early spring before it leafs out.
Suggested use: Hedge, Rain Garden
