Norway Spruce
Picea abies
The Norway Spruce, native to Europe, has been a popular ornamental tree in America since colonial times. Known for its consistent dark green color, it is the fastest-growing cold-tolerant spruce and thrives in heavy, wet soils better than many other evergreens. It’s also highly shade-tolerant, resistant to foliage diseases, and transplants easily, making it a reliable choice for landscapes. However, it grows into a large tree relatively quickly, so consider its size when planting. Its durability and size make it an excellent option for windbreaks in spacious areas. Grows 2ft per year.
Spacing: 12-15ft apart for privacy screen or wind break.
