Grows 50-60’ tall (occasionally up to 100’) with a dense, rounded crown.
Best in deep, rich, moist, well-drained soil; intolerant of poorly drained sites.
Prefers full sun to part shade; difficult to transplant.
More soil-tolerant than American beech.
Features smooth, dark gray bark and wavy, mostly untoothed leaves.
Native to central and southern European woodlands.
